Postpartum & Newborn Midwifery Care
I offer both prenatal and postpartum midwifery care for families planning a hospital birth. This care can also be a good fit for families planning a move mid-postpartum. Since our hospital systems are not set up for offering frequent, home-based postpartum care visits that include caring for the whole family, this is an area I particularly love to support families giving birth at the hospital! I find that nearly all families can benefit from more frequent and close contact postpartum, as they navigate such a major life experience and adjustment as birth, postpartum, and a new baby. Home-based midwifery care also offers the benefit of supporting and prioritizing rest, healing, physical and emotional recovery, more time at home with your baby, and avoiding uncomfortable car rides with your sore body and tiny newborn.
Postpartum and newborn midwifery care
I generally provide postpartum midwifery care as a full package of complete postpartum and newborn care from shortly after your birth through 6-8 weeks after. I will consider offering individual stand-alone postpartum and newborn appointments on a case-by-case basis.
Postpartum and newborn midwifery care includes:
1 prenatal visit to get to know each other, discuss your needs, and talk through your postpartum support systems and plans.
Initial postpartum visit either the day you are home from the hospital or the following day. Some families with longer hospital stays may choose to have their initial visit at the hospital.
2 additional visits in the first week postpartum, 1-2 visits in the second week postpartum, and then visits at 4 weeks and 6-8 weeks. Additional postpartum visits are common if any concerns arise that need closer support or more frequent contact.
I am available for your postpartum and newborn questions and concerns between appointments as well.
All of our postpartum visits will include support and advice as needed and desired for however you are feeding your baby: lactation, nursing, pumping, bottle feeding, formula, donor milk, or any combo of these!
Our postpartum visits will be a mix of: assessing you and your baby’s health and wellbeing, including physical, emotional, and mental health; discussing how your family is doing with the early postpartum time; strategizing for sleep, nutrition, and support; and reviewing and processing the labor and birth experience as you want and are ready.
Unless declined, care includes clinical assessments such as blood pressure checks, exam of any perineal sutures and/or cesarean incisions, listening to your baby’s heart and lungs, newborn weight checks, and assessment of umbilical healing. With your consent, I will update your OB/CNM and pediatrician with this information as appropriate.
